Over the weekend I toured the great city of New York with Joe, who's an aspiring artist. He has lived in New York for most of his life and has probably seen half of the greatest attributes the city have to offer. And although I've lived in the city for 23 years, I still get inspired by the unique people and alluring scenery. Sure, the bright lights that fill 42nd Street are a must see, but there's way more than that meets the eye. From my experience the greatest gems of the city lie in the backstreets and hidden areas throughout the city.
In my opinion, the best thing about living in New York is that pretty much anything you want and need is readily available. But at the same time, I believe New York City is a naked canvas, everyones experience is different. So I figured I'd take Joe, better known by his rap name Ch.I.L.L, to a few of the most inspirational spots I know of to help him get a feel for why I love the city so much.
We started in Downtown Brooklyn, which has changed significantly over the years. We spent a lot of our time talking, writing and exploring different aspects of the city. Our first stop was Walt Whitman Park, we spent a while there taking photos. Then stumbled upon a small art museum, a few high fashion stores and walked to the Brooklyn Bridge. Even I, someone who considers themselves an expert on the area, discovered some cool new spots.
