Inspired by Colorado’s up and coming fashion scene, Rachel Marie Hurst says that designing in Colorado is fun because she doesn’t have to adhere to the existing rules of fashion; she gets to make them up as she goes. Not only does the emerging fashion scene inspire her but also the woman she wants to become, “strong, independent, daring to be fierce. This woman is what inspires my design aesthetic. She is a leader and unafraid to take chances.” Her daring and fierce designs definitely portray this attitude.

Rachel Marie Hurst was an aspiring doctor when her friend wanted her help starting a student-run fashion group at the University of Colorado at Boulder. It was then that she realized her love of fashion was going to take her places. She switched her major to Costume Design, the closest thing to Fashion Design, she says, and learned all she could about the fashion world from her professors. She and her friend were able to start and grow the fashion group at CU. The student group still exists today.

While I was researching Rachel Marie Hurst I noticed that she was able to present a collection at Mercedes Benz 2012 Fashion Week as apart of the Diet Pepsi Refresh Fashion Show. She was one of four designers who were able to present their collections. She describes the experience as “a surreal moment.” Rachel Marie Hurst says she had doubted whether or not she was meant to be in the fashion industry; she was confused and struggling. The experience of presenting a collection at Fashion Week at 26 years old allowed her to taste her dream and focus on what was important, and that was that fashion design is still a business and since then she has been trying to move her business in the right direction. “I now know where I want to go with my business and trust in myself to take my business there,” Rachel Marie Hurst says of the experience of presenting at New York Fashion Week.

For Rachel Marie Hurst the whole design process takes about six months, start to finish. When she is doing a custom bridal gown, however, that process can jump to eight months. No matter how long it takes though, she loves presenting her collection; she feels like a proud mom she says. Not only that, but she loves how clothing can change people’s outlook on life. She loves seeing her clients light up when they put on one of her garments; “it’s like watching her fall in love.”
