The idea of collegiate style often brings to mind images of scratchy cardigans and logo-donning blazers. Not in Arizona. Here at Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus, students mill about in chic clothes that are both stylish and comfortable. In the midst of the metropolitan Phoenix area, where the college campus is located, I caught up with five fashionable undergrads to get the scoop on their street style vibes.

Larissa Lyman Style inspiration: “I usually dress for the ‘20s. I really like colors. Even in the winter, I try to be bright… mostly spring and summer colors.” Fashion advice: “Go thrift shopping, ‘cuz there’s a lot of unique things you don’t normally find, and you can find things from different decades, and just see what fits you best. And it’s cheap, so you don’t have to spend too much money." Favorite trends: “I like high-waisted things, like this skirt… I like crop tops, floral, sequins. And I love my hats too.” Fashion fast fact: The hat Larissa is wearing here is from the dollar store!

Lisa Travis Personal style: “I like to be super individual. I like to kind of look around and then not be exactly what everyone’s wearing. I don’t have a specific person that I look at their fashion for. I like to be myself.” Shopping tip: “[Forever 21] is good because they have these super fashionable pieces that are trendy for now, and then they’re not super expensive.”  Style philosophy: “When I go to the store, I look for stuff that my eyes are automatically attracted to and then I usually don’t think about if other people have them, and if I see a lot of people wearing… I don’t know, like the same pair of shoes, like those combat boots everyone wears, I’ll try to look for a style that’s a little more ‘me.’”

Austin Miller Personal style: “It’s kind of preppy, with some street style thrown in there. I come from North Carolina, so it’s very southern, so a lot of people are preppy there. But then when I moved here, a lot of people aren’t that preppy so I kind of changed it when I moved here to kind of… not stand out as much. I like to stand out to look nice.” Shopping tip: “Try stuff on before you buy it and find what you’re comfortable wearing. I’d definitely say to stick to certain color palettes, like if you like darker stuff or lighter stuff. Shop on the sales rack, it’s a good place to look. You can buy a lot more clothes for a lot less money and keep it interesting.” Fashion inspiration: “My mom has always dressed very nice, and I guess I take after her. I look a lot on shopping apps, like HauteLook and JackThreads and you see what they’re wearing on there and I’ll kind of be like, ‘Oh I like that and I like that, I have something like that I could wear.’” Fashion fast fact: Austin says he tends to opt for button-ups over more casual t-shirts. The one he is wearing here is from J. Crew.

Emi Kamezaki Personal style: “On the preppier side… but with a little bit of edge. Kind of Urban Outfitters-y, but a little bit more preppy.” Style inspiration: “I definitely like 80s stuff a lot. There’s kind of this noir Cal style that I try to go for… So Cal would be more beachy, but up North [is] hipster, you might say. ” Fashion fast fact: “I enjoy bows!” Emi says. The one she was wearing with this outfit [not visible in the photo] is from Forever 21.
