Nestled in trendy Hell’s Kitchen, FAME showcases new up and coming indie designers. I love traveling to fashion conventions to get a sneak peek at the next season and to find amazing brands before they hit it big in mainstream fashion. My assignment with Colabination was to scout out the newest fall trends at the fashion convention FAME located at the architecturally breathtaking Javits Center.
The Stevie Nicks Makeover: As a carryover trend from Spring, 1970’s hippie chic is also dominating the upcoming season. Be prepared to style your Spring pieces with paisley prints, patchwork details, suede fringe, and bell bottoms for a more fall look. Fall tones are heavy in browns, burnt orange, navy, camel, mustard yellow, and reds. Complete your outfit with a chocolate floppy wool hat and a sueded fringe hobo bag and you’re good to go.
Playing with Light and Texture: Not only is this trend a treat for the eyes, but your sense of touch can get in on the action too. Stock up your closet with texture rich velvet, chenille, bouclé, crushed velvet, chunky yarns and macramé. Capture the light with details of sequins and metallic in everything from apparel to accessories. More is more this season, so mix and match texture with patterns and don’t skimp on the accessories.
It’s all About Skirts: Be prepared to show some leg with both mini and midi length skirts ruling fall. Styles vary from pleated, denim, suede, prints, and embellished. To balance the look of a mini, pair with long sleeves and high necklines. For chilly fall evenings, put on a pair of textured or printed tights to add some interest to an ensemble.
Party Like it’s 1999: You’ll be kicking yourself for donating your high school wardrobe because the 1990s staples have returned. From prep school girl outfits à la Cruel Intentions, to mini babydoll dresses rocked by the Clueless gang, this throwback trend brings back so many memories for us Generation Xers. Fall 2015 has a fresh new take on these classic favorites with updated details for the modern day.
Mad for Plaid: There’s no shortage of plaid this season from bold tartans to subtle textured weaves. The fall staple returns by way of nostalgic sentiment with a mix of silhouettes. Garments can be worn in the throwback feminine schoolgirl style, or by contrast in men’s wear cuts for a tailored look. Fabrics vary from red tartans, herringbone, hounds tooth, checks, and tweed. For an updated urban style, mix your plaid with contrasting print graphic letterpress tees.
FAME’s indie designers brought some amazing work to the table. Fresh blood in the fashion scene brings an invigorating force and has supplied us with some of my all-time favorite fall style.
